"Why do you collect toys?"
As a longtime toy collector, I often run into non-collectors (like my brother) who ask me this question. There is no one all-encompassing answer, and I've found that different collectors collect toys for different reasons. One thing that unites us all is that the toys remind us in someway of our childhood. But that's far from the only reason. Many of us experience that "Isn't that freaking cool!" feeling looking at the latest toy on the shelves.
For me, toy collecting is like a treasure hunt. Anyone can go to Ebay and buy every toy they want at inflated prices, but for me there isn't much joy in that. That is not to say I don't use Ebay to look for deals or see where the market is, but for me the joy of toy collecting is pounding the pavement, both in meatspace and online. I love to make trips to the several local Toys 'R' Us stores in my city, as well as a couple different Target and Walmart locations. I also like to search various online websites, often for the aforementioned stores, looking for deals and just released items.
Toy collecting is like a giant treasure hunt for me, where I try to assemble to the correct pieces of my collection for as little money as possible. In a way, they are also an investment too, though the amount of room they take up in storage fees makes me wonder if that is just an excuse for my obsession. Though I have many loose toys, I am primarily a closed-box collector, as I like to keep my toys boxed up and in mint condition, while some collectors open all theirs up and put them on display. Some collectors focus on one brand, and others collect many different lines. I tend to move in cycles, being obsessed with collecting one line for a period of time, and then moving on to another, only to return to the first months or years later.
